When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
(SATB, Organ or Strings, 2005)
I found a SOUTHERN HARMONY tune called "Distress" in a hymnal, and found that it had the same meter as Isaac Watts' WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS. The tune is such a beautiful and haunting one, and really put a new spin on the text. I eventually incorporated the familiar tune "Hamburg" into my arrangement.
This piece can be performed with organ or string accompaniment.
When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demband my soul, my life, my all.
-Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Amazing Love! How can it be, that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
- Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
